My Favourite Quotes

Every day I receive a "Quote of the Day" by e-mail and have been getting these since I subscribed to the daily mailing back in 1999. I have read each and every one faithfully for 9 years. I have this thing for meaningful quotes because I believe in drawing upon the wisdom of others who have gone before us. Some of the messages I've come across over the years have been invaluable. There are some that seem so obvious and simple to the point of ridiculous. Yet, when you really take the words in, let them sink into your pores and apply them to your own life, they're very profound and sometimes even life-changing.

As a woman about to embark on a new career path, I found myself searching for strength and wisdom from as many sources as possible. It was about a year ago that I began saving my favourite quotes out of the many that I came across. The following are a few of those. I don't think they need any explanation.

If there is light in the soul, there will be beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the house. If there is harmony in the house, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world. Chinese Proverb

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. T. S. Eliot (1888-1965, American-born British Poet, Critic)

Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better. What if they are a little course, and you may get your coat soiled or torn? What if you do fail, and get fairly rolled in the dirt once or twice. Up again, you shall never be so afraid of a tumble. Ralph Waldo Emerson(1803-1882, American Poet, Essayist)

If you wait to do everything until you're sure it's right, you'll probably never do much of anything. Win Borden (American Businessman)

As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so life well used brings happy death. Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519, Italian Inventor, Architect, Painter, Scientist, Sculptor

How monotonous the sounds of the forest would be if the music came only from the Top Ten birds. Dan Bennett

Don't complain about what you don't have. Use what you've got. To do less than your best is a sin. Every single one of us has the power for greatness, because greatness is determined by service -- to yourself and to others. Oprah Winfrey(1954-, American TV Personality, Actress, Author)

The following passage comes from a book called "Lists to Live By: For Everything that Really Matters" that I bought about 10 years ago in one of my soul-searching phases :). It also helped me find the man of my dreams! I love this...

The World Needs People...

Who cannot be bought

Whose word is their bond

Who put character above wealth

Who possess opinions and a will

Who are larger than their vocations

Who do not hesitate to take chances

Who will not lose their individuality in a crowd

Who will be as honest in small things as in great things

Who will make no compromise with wrong

Whose ambitions are not confined to their own selfish desires

Who will not say they do it "because everybody else does it"

Who are true to their friends through good report and evil report, in adversity as well as prosperity

Who do not believe that shrewdness, cunning, and hardheadedness are the best qualities for winning success

Who are not ashamed or afraid to stand for the truth when it is unpopular

Who can say "no" with emphasis, although the rest of the world says "yes".

Last, but not least, my most recently favourite quote came from my very own sister, Kim, just over a month ago. She is always so generous and during the Opening Weekend of Harmony House, she presented me, my sisters and our Mom each with a special, meaningful pendant and chain that she chose for us. This was her way of thanking us for planning our trip to Montreal for her BEd graduation. As if the new jewelry wasn't enough, she placed a note inside each box. Mine said this...

"Thank you for being so solid. The strength you exude amazes me. I look up to you for the positive choices you have made in your life and for being such a beautiful person...you mean the world to me. Love, Kim"

I'm not trying to boast or brag (that would be ignoring my Lists to Live By!). I just think it's amazing how another person's words and thoughts can be such a powerful force in your life. Especially when it's someone you respect and admire (as I do my sister(s)) and others who take the time to write their thoughts down and share them. The world needs way more of that!
