Well, it's 5:57 a.m. and I've been awake for over an hour now. This is the way it's been for the past month! I wake up and my mind starts wandering, thinking about theatre details, what I have to do today, the kids, what I'm going to wear on opening night, how we're going to make sure everyone who comes to the theatre is happy, and the list goes on! I'm sure I'm not the only one who's ever had a spell of sleepless nights. I know Kris isn't getting all of his Z's either :)
But, no time for self pity! There's exactly 2 weeks until opening night and it's going to be quite a special, historical event. We're all very happy to be seeing our families and friends who we haven't seen in awhile. Kris' new CDs have arrived! This is his third album and his best work ever. It's called "Better Left Said". His goal for this album was to make it as honest as possible - both in the studio during the recording and also in his words. He talks about this in the CD jacket and he puts it more eloquently than I just did :) The album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY with musician/producer, Doug Derryberry. He has done a long list of extraordinary things in his career, but I think his biggest claim to fame is the fact that he is Bruce Hornsby's guitar player. I was a huge Hornsby fan in the 80s. Kris actually got to see him live and meet him during one of his recording trips. Lucky duck! Kris speaks so highly of Doug and his wife, Sarena. From all I've heard, they are super people and Kris was very privileged to have the chance to stay and work with them.
My favourite song on the album is called "He Lasts", written about his late Grampy. Very touching. It even made Jenna cry. She's only 12, but she's got a deep soul and wears her heart on her sleeve. I can't wait to hear Kris play it on the grand live at the theatre. Oh, I just had another "thought" - GET KLEENEX! Details, details!
I've been having lots of fun creating our video slide show for Opening Weekend, too. It's now over 10 minutes long and I'm not finished yet! Creativity is my forte. Math and science, not so much :) Not that the video is of professional calibre, but it works. We've got pics and video footage of the renovations and a few special family/kid moments thrown in along the way. I just have to add a few more pictures and choose the right music to go along with it, and voila! Thanks go to Bobby for his advice and technical assistance.
I bet if you were to look up the word "scatterbrain" in the dictionary, there would be a picture of me beside it. It may have something to do with the interrupted sleep, but also that the human brain can only handle and process so much information at one time. When there's a lot of things on your mind, some things get lost in the shuffle! Well, at least that's the way my brain has been operating lately. For instance, in a moment of haste and inattention (thinking about paint colours for the exterior), I backed into another car and dented the fender. First time EVER in 20 years of driving. About a week ago I was cleaning the kitchen. I unloaded the dishwasher and started reloading with dirty dishes. I left that for a minute to go and do something else, came back and started unloading the dirty dishes from the dishwasher and putting them in the cupboard. Then I had to find the dirty dishes I had put into the cupboard and start again. Haste makes waste! There are more, but I won't bore you any longer. Kris is building a collection (figuratively speaking) of what my sisters and he call "Mel's World" stories. It's a good quality to be able to laugh at yourself, isn't it?
I admire Kris for his ability to remain focused and productive on the reno side of things. No matter what obstacles he faces, he always manages to plow through them and keep going. So, it looks like we're on schedule to finish up the remaining structural details. Kris installed the seats this past week so now it really looks like a theatre should! They're very comfortable, too. There doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house.
We hope everyone likes the new Pumpkin Pie colour now smack dab in the middle of the village! We've heard many positive comments on how it's brightened up the neighbourhood. I think it will be even nicer once the second coat goes on this coming week and the yard is all tidied up!
For those of you who plan to be with us opening weekend, tickets are on sale. Just call the theatre at 964-2255 or e-mail us through this site and we'll take care of you. I've started distributing brochures and I'll be doing a couple of interviews next week, so watch for those, spread the word and just ENJOY!
